Korean Chip Stocks Crash 8%, Bitcoin Falls Below $81K in Spillover

Korean chip stocks crashed 8%, dragging Bitcoin below $81K as ETF flows turn negative and institutions pull back.

Start here: on October 15, South Korea's Kospi index crashed 8% in a single day, led down by memory chipmaker SK Hynix, with U.S. memory chip stocks also sliding in premarket trading. This wasn't a crypto-native problem — it started in stock markets and spilled over.

Step one: safe-haven demand pushed Treasury yields (interest rates on government bonds) lower as money fled riskier assets. Crypto got dragged along almost immediately — Bitcoin spot ETFs (funds that trade on stock exchanges and track bitcoin's price) saw $261 million in net outflows on October 14, while Ethereum ETFs lost $130 million the same day.

Step two: the Fear & Greed Index dropped to 53, breaking below its 7-day range floor of 57-69 — the gloomiest reading in about a week. Nearly $1 billion in leveraged positions got force-liquidated, while ETH's open interest (total outstanding leveraged bets) shrank and funding rates flipped positive, signs of leverage unwinding.

Where things stand now: Bitcoin trades at $80,416, down 2.8% in 24 hours and 2.2% over the week, sitting 4.4% below its 7-day high — a pullback, not a collapse.

Worth flagging: our own BTC thesis turned bullish in late September, based on open interest staying flat during a rally — a sign of clean spot buying rather than leveraged speculation, backed by same-day ETF inflows at the time. But the return to ETF net outflows on October 14, with today's brief noting earlier scattered inflows failed to turn into a trend, suggests institutional sentiment has shifted from mixed to wait-and-see. That sits in some tension with the earlier bullish call, and whether the stance gets revised depends on how flows move over the next few days.

What to watch next: whether the tech stock selloff keeps spreading, and whether ETF flows turn positive again. Continued outflows would suggest institutions are still sitting it out; a reversal would point to this being a short-lived spillover.
