The popular read: Bitcoin ETF outflows have stopped, institutions are coming back. The evidence cited is October 8's $485 million single-day outflow (the largest in months) being followed by a $21 million inflow on October 10.
But look closer and the "reversal" story falls apart. The most recent reading (October 9) shows inflows of just $21 million — smaller, not bigger, than the October 10 figure. That's not a trend, that's noise. Our own daily brief at the time called October 10 "day one of stabilization," explicitly not a confirmed direction. Meanwhile Ethereum ETFs have posted nine straight trading days of net outflows. If institutions were genuinely rotating back into crypto, you wouldn't expect this split.
There's a second thread worth noting: leverage positioning has been just as indecisive. We shifted our BTC stance from cautiously bullish to cautiously bearish on October 7, then back to neutral on October 9 after open interest (total outstanding leveraged bets) dropped 4.9% — typically a sign of short-covering, not fresh conviction either way. Small ETF inflows and shorts unwinding showing up around the same time suggests nobody is actually committing hard in either direction right now.
A third possibility: this isn't a reversal or a continued selloff — it's a fragile equilibrium that could tip either way. BTC currently sits at $82,598, still 4.6% below its 7-day high, with the Fear & Greed Index at 69 (greed) despite the tepid flows. What would actually break the tie is two-plus consecutive days of inflows scaling back up toward the size of that October 8 outflow. Until then, "stabilized" belongs in quotation marks.
